Arthur "GB." Smith started recording in 1938 for the Bluebird label, but his big break came in 1948, when MGM released his "Banjo Boogie" and the double-sided hit "Guitar Boogie/Boomerang". These were his biggest hits which are included in this CD. Arthur recorded numerous songs for Super Disc Records since 1944 which were bought by MGM in 1948 and released or re-released. Arthur changed the name of the group several times. Best known name seemed to be "The Kracker or Cracker Jacks". Arthur has been one of the top guitarists back then, but he was also a real artist on his fiddle and banjo and possibly other instruments. His very talented brothers Ralph and Sonny joined him vocally and instrumentally, although Arthur and Ralph have been great solo singers, too. Arthur didn't seem to travel much since he appeared on WBT radio and WBTV Charlotte, South Carolina since the 1930s for sevearal decades and he also ran a recording studio since the 1950s. An album of great historical meaning. |
