CCD 239 The Golden Age Of Frankie Marvin (25 tracks) = F HONEY, DO YOU THINK IT'S WRONG/POPCORN POPPIN' MAMA/BABY, THAT WON'T GET IT/WINE, WOMEN AND SONG/GUITAR POLKA/IT'S A SIN/HONEY, COULD BE/HAVE I BEEN MEAN TO YOU/HAPPY GO LUCKY BOY/OKLAHOMA, LAND OF THE SUNNY WEST/DON'T SEND MY BOY TO PRISON/THE GIRL I LEFT BEHIND/MOTHER'S SONG OF LOVE/OKLAHOMA BLUES/IN THE JAILHOUSE NOW/COWBOY'S HEAVEN/SHERIFF'S SALE/CUDDLED IN MY MAMMY'S ARMS/LIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS/SHE' S OLD AND BENT, BUT SHE JUST KEEPS HOOFIN' ALONG/MY LULU/THE TWO-GUN COWBOY/MOUNTAIN BOY/I'M GONNA YODEL MY WAY TO HEAVEN: Frankie Marvin and his brother Johnnie played guitar on Gene Autry's first session for Victor in 1929 which was a short time after they got acquainted with each other and have become life-time friends. Before Frankie was hired as Gene's steelguitarist he had his own career as an excellent singer and yodeler. The items in this album were released between ca. 1929 and 1946 and are among his best. His voice is great, but hard to compare with anyone else. However, his style can be compared with the early mainstreams greats like Carson Robison, Vernon Dalhart, Jimmie Rodgers and Al Dexter and so can the instrumentation (banjo, accordion, trumpet, harmonica, resonator guitar etc.). He even did co-writings with Al. This is Frankie's first album ever which was long overdue. A must for all fans of good solid country music with great historical meaning. |
