The 1996 deceased Fred Kirby was an artist with a very powerful voice who spent almost his entire life in Charlotte, North Carolina. Therefore, this great talent was basically regionally known. However, his "Atomic Power" gained world-fame and was 1946 in the Billboard charts by The Buchanan Brothers (see also CD 9018). Although covered by major artists like Red River Dave, Rex Allen or Red Foley, Fred's version is the most impressing one and one of the rarest. Fred was an early member of the WBT Briarhoppers in the early 1930s with Don White. He started recording for the Bluebird label in 1936 and made solo recordings and duets with Don White and Cliff Carlisle. He changed to Decca in 1938. In the mid 40s he was the first to be on Sonora records, in 1950 MGM released very few items with Arhtur "Guitar Boogie" Smith on guitar. From 1950 to 1952 he was under contract with Columbia. Most of the recordings present Fred as a solo singer, but you will find very beautiful duet and trio recordings as well. Many are in the style of the Carolina Playboys since bascially the same musicians seemed to be used. His later items that are here included tend more to country boogie style.
