The Masters Family consisted of the married couple Lucille and Johnnie and son Owen Masters. The pair started recording in 1946 for Rich-R-Tone as The Dixie Sweethearts. Their early recordings featured Johnnie on mandolin with Owen on lead guitar while later recordings had a richer instrumentation by Nashville session musicians like Don Helms <steel guitar>, Grady Martin <guitar>, Tiny Greer <bass> or Old Brother Charlie (Arnett) <piano>. The Masters recorded only very few secular records and can be considered one of the most successful country gospel groups of the 1950s. |
