LP 125 Norman Phelps' Virginia Rounders-Norman, Willie & Earl in 1936 SKUNK IN THE COLLARD PATCH <Inst.>/IT'S TIGHT LIKE THAT/MY MOTHER AND DAD/ BLACK EYED SUSAN BROWN/MARGIE/WHEN I WORE MY DADDY'S BROWN DERBY/MY MOTHER/SWEET VIOLETS/HONEY SUCKLE ROSE/I LIKE MOUNTAIN MUSIC/IT AIN'T NOBODY'S DIRTY BUSINESS HOW MY BABY TREATS ME/TALKING 'BOUT YOU/I LIKE BANANAS BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO BONES/MY BABY'S HOT/SWING LOW, SWEET CHARIOT/EARL'S BREAKDOWN (Bear's Gap) <Inst.>. Those of you who bought the Cattle LP 117 by Willie Phelps & his brothers will be surprised to compare this release by the Phelps boys with the earlier product. It's completely different in style. These earliest recordings made in 1936 for Decca records will remind you a lot of the Prairie Ramblers (fiddle, accordion, drums, banjo etc.). They don't copy the Ramblers it's just the style that was in in the 30's when Pop, Ragtime, Blues and Mountain String Music was mixed and put on wax. The boys have a lot of drive, maybe even more than the Ramblers. There is enough material left of that type for a Volume 2. Your demand for Vol. 1 will be my decision for such a possibility. |
